Apple Day

Jackson's first major outing was to Moser Ranch near a tiny delta hamlet called Ryde, California.  Beautiful drive after 680 and Hwy 4 along 160 and 220, both of which hug canals, past Antioch and through Isleton to the sunny apple orchard.

We were invited for "Apple Day" by friend Mary Small, whose uncle owns the orchard.  Every year friends and family gather at the tail end of the harvest to pick what the "pro" pickers haven't.  And that's a lot!  Picking the ripe, green beauties hidden in the trees was quite like a treasure hunt, like finding Easter eggs, or golf balls in the rough.  Hopefully we'll return in years to come and JJA will be able to find some himself.  What fun that will be.  Thanks Mary!

Pictured: That's Colin's award-winning apple (biggest of the day), the same size as Jackson's (award-winning) head.
